How to keep your dryer vent safe. Three quick checks, and when to call. Clean the screen every load. Pull the lint screen before or after every load. The CPSC recommends it. Check the duct behind it. Behind the dryer, the duct should be metal, short and not crushed. Plastic or foil accordion duct should go. Feel the air outside. With the dryer running, go outside. You should feel strong, warm air and see the flap open. Once a year, or sooner. If clothes take longer to dry or the room gets hot, the vent needs cleaning. Once a year is right for most families.
